Guthi Bill controversy: PM consulting Kathmandu lawmakers

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli

Kathmandu, June 17

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has called a meeting of all lawmakers of the Kathmandu Valley in his bid to seek a solution to the protests launched by locals of the valley and others against the controversial Guthi Bill.

The meeting has been called for 3 pm at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Kathmandu on Monday.

Because lawmakers of Oli’s own Nepal Communist Party have also opposed the bill, it is likely that the Prime Minister will heed their demand, according to a member of Parliament.

Earlier this morning, PM Oli summoned Minister for Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation Padma Kumari Aryal to enquire about the issue.

Upon his arrival after the weeklong Europe trip on Sunday, Prime Minister Oli had said the government would make needful corrections to the bill.

Stakeholders and local activists have been protesting the bill recently registered in the Federal Parliament claiming it would keep traditional community organisations called ‘guthi’ and properties owned by them under the control of government. They have accused the government of trying to create a new place to recruit their cadres through the bill.
