Minister for Education, Science, and Technology, Giriraj Mani Pokharel, has clarified that the government is not going to hand over the management of community (public) schools to the private ones.

Earlier on May 28, while presenting the annual budget for the next fiscal year, Finance Minister Yuba Raj Khatiwada had said the government would hold each private school running classes up to the secondary level responsible to improve at least one public school’s education quality and infrastructures.

After the proposal drew criticisms from experts and social media users, minister Pokharel had issued a statement clarifying he had not forwarded the proposal.

Responding to the lawmakers’ queries’ regarding the budget allocated to the ministry for the next year in the House of Representatives on Tuesday also, the minister said the government would not give up its responsibility of the public schools.

He said the private schools, instead, could be made to contribute a  certain amount to a government fund, which would be used to construct infrastructures for public schools.
