Govt to prorogue House session tomorrow; impeachment motion in limbo

Kathmandu, May 17

As the government is planning to prorogue the current Parliament session tomorrow and call a new one for next week, the impeachment motion filed against Chief Justice Sushila Karki has been pushed into limbo.

President Bidya Devi Bhandari will prorogue the session after being recommended the same by the Prime Minister in consultation with the Speaker.

Generally, bills pending in Parliament will be carried over to the next session whereas other motions and proposals cease to exist when the session is prorogued.

Though the parties which filed the motion, Nepali Congress and CPN-Maoist Centre, are not in a mood to withdraw the motion anytime soon, the Supreme Court has already ordered the Parliament Secretariat not to move the motion.

Accordingly, CJ Karki has already returned to her office. However, she is due to retire in June first week.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet meeting has been called for Thursday morning to recommend end of the House session and decide the date for commencement of the new session.
