Govt removes controversial Health Secretary Koirala from ministry

Yadav Koirala

Kathmandu, May 28

The government has transferred Yadav Koirala, the secretary at the Ministry of Health and Population, to the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers.

Koirala had earned notoriety at the ministry. While the country is fighting the Covid-19 crisis, he was accused of criticising doctors and other health officials unnecessarily and demotivating them.

Reportedly, he had also tried to take action against Dr Sher Bahadur Pun of the Shukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital for his statements in the media over the crisis. After public criticism, the action was halted.

It has been learned that the government transferred him as he failed to coordinate different departments and units under the ministry for the Covid-19 response.

Laxman Aryal, a secretary at the OPMCM, will replace him.
