Govt orders police to search absconding sugar mill owners

Kathmandu, December 31

The government has ordered Nepal Police to search and find sugar mill operators who are allegedly absconding denying to pay outstanding dues to sugarcane farmers.

The Ministry of Home Affairs wrote to Nepal Police Headquarters on Tuesday, directing them to find the absconders and hand over them to the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies.

The order follows a continuous protest of the farmers in Kathmandu demanding that the government ensure that the mill owners pay them the dues of the past few years at the earliest.

Earlier, on Monday, a parliamentary committee had also directed the government to meet the demand without any delay.
