Govt changing school hours to ease traffic

Kathmandu, March 16

The government is preparing to change school hours from 9 am to 4 pm, in its bid to ease traffic during peak hours in Kathmandu among other major cities of the country.

Currently, the official school hours begin from 10 am to 4 pm. But, the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers has already directed the Ministry of Education to extend one more hour in the mornings from the new academic session beginning next month.

“We decided to open the schools early after traffic jams increased in Kathmandu Valley and other major cities,” Education Secretary Mahesh Prasad Dahal says, adding the school buses run by private schools have also been found responsible for the congestion.

“But this decision is likely to be implemented for all schools across the country. We are discussing the issue with stakeholders currently,” he clarifies.

The ministry has also formed a team to implement the decision headed by its Education Section chief Krishna Prasad Kapri.
