Baglung, December 25

CPN-UML General Secretary Ishwar Pokharel said on Sunday that the Prachanda government brought forth the Constitution Amendment Bill as part of a plan to trigger a war of languages.

Pokharel maintained that the idea was to give constitutional recognition to Hindi by including it in the Constitution as official language of the government and trigger a war over langauges.

Those, who were trying to stop promulgation of the Constitution (through a popularly-elected Constituent Assembly), are now blocking its implementation, Pokharel said. He alleged that points mentioned in the amendment proposal had the same motive.

Pokharel, speaking at a press conference that Press Chautari Baglung had organised on Sunday, said the UML is not against Constitution amendment. But he added that the amendment proposal aims to trigger a war over languages and attack national unity.

No matter what, our party will not let the Parliament discuss the proposal that is against national interest and that seeks to upset communal harmony, he said. Pokharel said the proposal has violated the Constitution itself.

Hidden motives?

  • Government-sponsored Constitution amendment proposal is part of a plot to trigger a war over languages in Nepal
  • It aims to give Hindi the status of official language in Nepal
  • The proposal has violated the Constitution itself
  • This proposal is against national interest, it aims to upset communal harmony. No matter what, UML will not let the Parliament discuss the proposal
