Get me a ship, ‘any’ ship will do: Oli tells Transport Minister

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli holds a meeting with ministers and secretaries of ministries, in Kathmandu, on Wednesday, July 11, 2018.

Kathmandu, July 12

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has directed the Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Raghubir Mahaseth to make sure that the government launches a ship service in its rivers of the country at the earliest.

Speaking at a meeting of ministers and secretaries of all ministries on Wednesday, the Prime Minister issued the directive.

During the meeting, Minister Mahaseth, however, reported to the PM that operating ships in the rivers of Nepal would be difficult as many bridges including those along the East-West Highway would obstruct the movement.

But, the Prime Minister was persistent. “He was of the view that we should operate the ships of any type possible. He said even small ships that can go underneath the bridges would work,” a source who attended the meeting says.

He added that the service was a part of the ‘spirit’ of the government, hence it would be launched at the earliest.

Oli had invited all ministers and secretaries of all ministries to his office to get updated about their activities.

Accordingly, most of the invitees had reached the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers at the scheduled time, 1 pm. The PM, however, made them wait till 3 pm.

The meeting had lasted for six hours. But, all ministers could not finish their presentations. Therefore, the meeting will continue on Saturday, the source informed.
