Gagan Kumar Thapa has been elected president of the Nepali Congress, securing 6,584 votes in the party’s 15th general convention.
Thapa defeated his rival, Shyam Krishna Khadgi, who received 375 votes, according to Mahesh Gautam, a member of the convention’s media centre.
Vote counting began late Friday night at the National Assembly Hall in Kathmandu following the election held earlier that day. The counting was completed on Saturday morning.
According to the election committee, 7,039 of the 7,317 convention delegates cast their votes. A total of 54 ballots were declared invalid.
Ballot boxes for positions other than the party president have been taken to the party’s central office in Sanepa for counting.
