Front pages of major Nepali and English broadsheet dailies published from Kathmandu on Friday are full of various issues from political, sociocultural and financial issues. The appointment of Navin Kumar Ghimire as the Chief of Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority, ruling Nepal Communist Party’s preparation to impeach Justice Deepak Raj Joshee, strike of transport workers against some provisions of new criminal code, unanimous elections of chairpersons of 10 committees of House of Representatives among others are key issues that have been featured on the front pages today. Likewise, the murder of a school principal in Sunsari district of eastern Nepal has also been covered significantly.

Following up over recent incidents of rape and murder, some newspapers have continued highlighting analyses about the cases.

CIAA gets boss after seven months

While Nepal’s anti-corruption constitution body was headless since the retirement of Deep Basnyat in February, President Bidya Devi Bhandari on Thursday appointed Navin Kumar Ghimire, who was taking charge of the Commission as the Acting Chief, to the top position, according to newspaper reports.

The appointment follows endorsement of his name for the position by the Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee.

Meanwhile, Ghimire took oath of office and secrecy from Chief Justice Om Prakash Mishra and assumed his office yesterday, expressing commitment to taking action against everyone involved in corruption cases, report the newspapers.

Joshee adamant against resignation

Following reports that the ruling Nepal Communist Party began preparing signatures claiming it will file an impeachment motion against Justice Deepak Raj Joshee if he does not resign soon, the controversial judge says he will not, according to reports in Annapurna Post and Republica.

Rajdhani claims the ruling party is planning to wait for two more days before filing the motion to see if he will resign though it can easily get support of two thirds House of Representatives members to impeach him.

Meanwhile,  Naya Patrika has analysed what problems will arise if Joshee continues his duty.

10 House panels get unopposed leaders

Gorkhapatra, Rajdhani, Nepal Samacharpatra, The Kathmandu Post and Republica report that all 10 thematic committees in the House of Representatives have elected their chairpersons unopposed on Thursday as only one lawmaker filed candidacy to lead each committee.

The unanimity was possible as the ruling Nepal Communist Party commands a clear majority in the House as well as all committees so that candidates without its support cannot win the race. Of 10 committees, one is being led by the main opposition Nepali Congress, one by the Federal Socialist Forum-Nepal and eight by NCP.

Meanwhile, six chairs among eight NCP lawmakers are women.

Nirmala Pant’s postmortem report suggests rape

The Seti Zonal Hospital in Dhangadhi has prepared the postmortem report of 13-year-old Nirmala Pant, who was murdered around two months ago, concluding she was strangled after rape, according to Naya Patrika.

The report informs that the murderer strangled her as there was no any bruise in other parts except neck.

Meanwhile, this case remains elusive for the lack of evidence and police are to blame for destroying them, the report claims.

Transporters withdraw plan to open pre-Dashain ticket booking

Karobar lead story informs that transport entrepreneurs have withdrawn themselves from an agreement reached with the government for opening advance booking of public bus tickets for upcoming Dashain festival from today. The entrepreneurs have put forth the withdrawal of hike in the price of petroleum products as a precondition for the opening of booking.

Official says India does not have any precondition for power purchase

The National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aaayog)’s Vice Chairperson Rajiv Kumar has says India does not have any precondition to buy electricity from Nepal, reports Abhiyan in its lead story.

Speaking at a function in Kathmandu yesterday, the official said there was no precondition though a guideline of Indian government requires at least 51 per cent Indian investment into the project to buy electricity from any foreign country.

Nepal Army assures no delay in fast track

The Nepal Army, which has recently selected a Korean consultant to prepare  a detailed project report for the Kathmandu-Terai fast track project, has claimed the ambitious project will be over in the given period of four years though 13 months have been passed without the DPR, according to a report in The Kathmandu Post.

Meanwhile, the national military organisaiton is preparing to sign an agreement with Soosung Engineering on September 29. The company will be given four months for the assignment.

Six bases of ‘national language’

The Language Commission has identified six bases to give a status of ‘national language’ at the provincial level, according to the anchor story in Gorkhapatra. The Commission has recently submitted its report to the government.

The bases are the number of speakers, linguistic identity, script, standardisation, acceptability and history, according to the report.

Meanwhile, the Commission has concluded that local governments can recognise local languages as official ones; but the Commission has to consent that.

Rudrakasha farms under CCTV surveillance

Rudraksha farmers in Bhojpur district of eastern Nepal have begun deploying CCTVs for surveillance of their cultivation as thieves began attacking the lucrative product used for religious purposes, reports Kantipur anchor story.

The farmers would guard the farms themselves till last year, but they have embraced the modern technology spending some thousand rupees now as the monetary benefit of the plant increased with the rise in its use, the report informs.
