Kathmandu, October 15
Md. Firdos Alam, son of Nepali Congress leader Aftab Alam, has been elected joint general secretary.
He was elected from the Madhesi cluster at the Congress’s 15th General Convention.
In a post on its official Facebook page, the party congratulated Firdos Alam on his election as joint general secretary and wished him a successful term.
He is the only Congress MP elected from Madhesh Province in the House of Representatives election held on March 5.
Firdos was elected a member of the House of Representatives from Rautahat-2 with 29,528 votes.
His closest rival, Nepali Communist Party candidate Kiran Kumar Sah, received 18,442 votes.
Firdos’s father, Mohammad Aftab Alam, was repeatedly elected from Rautahat. He drew attention over the bomb blast at Rajpur, Rautahat, on the day before the 2064 BS Constituent Assembly election and the killings said to have followed it.
In that case, Rautahat District Court sentenced Aftab to life imprisonment. But later, the Birgunj bench of Janakpur High Court acquitted him, ruling that the evidence was insufficient.
Alam was freed from jail after the acquittal. He died in Kathmandu on November 7, 2025, aged 63, while undergoing treatment.
