Female politicians want separate fast-track court for VAW cases

Inter-Party Women’s Alliance submits a memorandum to Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa, on Thursday, October 8, 2020.

Kathmandu, October 8

A group of female politicians representing different political parties has demanded that the government establish a separate fast-track court to look after cases of violence against women.

They also demand only women are appointed as judges in such courts.

The Inter-Party Women’s Alliance submitted a memorandum to Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa with the demand on Thursday.

Sabitra Bhusal of the ruling Nepal Communist Party, who heads the alliance, argues that normal court procedures cannot ensure justice for women as the number of cases is rising.

The group has also demanded that the government take strong action against people involved in settling rape cases in the communities without taking them to the court as such incidents are also on the rise.

Likewise, the leaders say the government should investigate recent rape cases reported from various parts of the country.
