Excise duty on alcohol, tobacco upped

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Krishna Bahadur Mahara enters the Parliament building before presenting the budget for next fiscal year, on Monday, May 29, 2017.

Kathmandu, May 29

The government has said it will increase the excise duty on alcohol and tobacco products.

Presenting the annual budget for the next fiscal year 2017/18 at the Parliament meeting today, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Krishna Bahadur Mahara said a nominal increase would be made.

However, other provisions on taxation would not be changed for the next year as the code of conduct imposed for the second phase of local level elections has barred the government from bringing new rules, according to Mahara.
