The Election Commission says it will investigate into the incident of tearing ballot papers at the vote counting venue of Bharatpur Metropolitan City in Chitwan district and will wait till the investigation team submits its report to resume the counting.

After some CPN-Maoist Centre cadres reportedly torn ballot papers at midnight on Sunday, the counting had been halted indefinitely.

Joint Attorney General Gita Prasad Timalsina leads the team formed under Clause 50.3 of the Local Level Elections Act, 2017.

A representative of the Ministry of Home Affairs and a DIG of Nepal Police are members of the committee.

“The committee will reach Bharatpur today itself for investigation,” the Commission spokesperson Surya Prasad Sharma informed amid a press conference today.

Whereas the CPN-UML has demanded resumption of counting at the earliest, the Maoist party has said the voting should be held again in Ward 19.

Both the parties have accused each other for the tension.
