The Election Commission has asked the government and parties to announce the date for the local level elections next week.

As the tenure of all local-level elected officials will be over in the third week of May, the commission says the elections have to be held around one month before that and the commission needs 120 days to prepare after the date declared.

The constitution has it that local elections will be held every five years, and the government had held the first elections in 2017 after the promulgation of the 2015 constitution.

During a meeting with major political parties on Friday, Chief Election Officer Dinesh Thapaliya told leaders that the poll date should be announced as soon as possible, informs the commission’s spokesperson Shaligram Sharma Paudel after the meeting.

Paudel says the government will soon hold a meeting with the government also to put pressure on the government for an early announcement.
