Deuba keeps mum as own wife leads delegation demanding 33 per cent women’s participation in Cabinet

Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba in a meeting with women lawmakers of various parties, on Sunday, July 16, 2017.

Kathmandu, July 16

Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba seems to have faced an odd situation on Sunday afternoon as his own wife Arzu Rana Deuba led a delegation of women lawmakers to his office.

Lawmakers of various parties led by the First Lady submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister demanding at least 33 per cent share of the Cabinet be given to women.

Deuba currently leads an eight-member Cabinet and there is no woman. He is planning to expand the Council of Ministers soon and women lawmakers want him to meet their demands in expansion.

Deuba, however, did not say anything as he received the memorandum, a lawmaker who was a part of the delegation tells Onlinekhabar.

Women leaders from major parties including Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, CPN-Maoist Centre, Rastriya Prajatantra Party and Federal Socialist Forum-Nepal have recently formed the Women Coordination Committee to organise various activities to enhance women’s participation. They have agreed on the rotational leadership and the Prime Minister’s wife, also a Nepali Congress lawmaker, currently leads the group.
