Kathmandu, June 8
The Department of Roads has claimed that it made significant progress in the construction and maintenance of various roads in the country during the nationwide lockdown imposed to control the coronavirus outbreak.
The department says road stretches with a total length of 75 km have been blacktopped since the first day of the lockdown (March 24). Though the department had halted regular field works in the beginning, it resumed works with necessary precautions later.
The department’s chief Keshav Kumar Sharma says stretches with a total length of 40 km have been gravelled whereas 52 km black topped roads have been overlaid.
Bridge construction works and works related to road marking also continued during this period, Sharma says, adding 21 bridged which had reached the final stage of construction before the lockdown have been completed now. Likewise, construction works are underway for 248 bridges.
However, the target could not be met due to problems in human resource and construction material supplies, according to him.
