The Nepali Congress has opposed the government’s plan to introduce land ordinance, saying any changes to the law should be made only after detailed discussions in parliament.

Speaking at a press conference held at Singha Durbar on Friday, Basana Thapa, chief whip of the Nepali Congress parliamentary party, said the government’s move to amend laws through an ordinance was inconsistent with the parliamentary democratic process.

Thapa also pointed to what she described as a contradiction between the amendments Law Minister Sobita Gautam had proposed in the past and the position she has taken since joining the government.

“Why was the amendment you proposed considered right yesterday but wrong today?” Thapa said.

She added that the Nepali Congress had opposed the land-related ordinance previously as well, maintaining that the proposed changes should be discussed clause by clause in parliament before moving forward.

“Our position was firm then, and it remains the same today,” she said.

The party has stressed that land-related legislation should be developed through detailed deliberations in parliament, which it described as the sovereign forum for lawmaking.
