Commission publishes National Assembly election calendar

The Election Commission has published its calendar for the National Assembly elections scheduled for January 23, 2020.

The term of 19 lawmakers, a third of the 59-member Upper House, is expiring on March 4, 2020. The constitution requires elections to be held to fill the vacancies at least 35 days before that. Whereas 18 members will be elected, the last member will be appointed by the President.

Chiefs and deputies of local governments and provincial lawmakers will cast their votes in the elections. Votes of these two groups will have different weights.

According to the commission’s schedule, the election procedure will begin on January 2 with the publication of voters’ list. The other steps are as follows:

  • January 2: Publication of voters’ list; complaints about the list
  • January 3: Investigation into the complaints; publication of the final list
  • January 5: Nomination of candidates; publication of the candidates’ list
  • January 6: Complaints against the candidates
  • January 7: Investigation into the complaints
  • January 8: Publication of the candidates’ list
  • January 9: Withdrawal of the candidacies
  • January 10: Publication of the final list of the candidates; distribution of election symbols
  • January 23: Voting
