Civil society leaders protest impeachment motion

A mass gathered to protest impeachment motion against Chief Justice Sushila Karki, in Basantapur, on Wednesday, May 3, 2017.

Kathmandu, May 3

Civil society leaders on Wednesday staged a protest at Basantapur Dabali of Kathmandu against the impeachment motion filed by ruling parties against Chief Justice Sushila Karki.

The activists including former Chief Justice Kalyan Shrestha, medical education reform crusader Dr Govinda KC, civil society leader Krishna Pahadi among others demanded that the Nepali Congress and the CPN-Maoist Centre withdraw the motion as it was brought with an ill intent.

Dr Govinda KC

Dr KC, who has staged fast-unto-death nine times demanding reforms in the medical education sector over past few years, warned that he would stage another satyagraha if the impeachment motion was not taken back and Karki was not revived on her top position.

Former Chief Justice Kalyan Shrestha

Former CJ Shrestha warned that the leaders instigating the motion would face its consequences later.

Likewise, Pahadi said people would impeach the leaders if they did not correct their mistake.

The lawmakers of NC and CPN-MC had filed the motion against Karki on Sunday, resulting in her immediate suspension.
