Kathmandu, August 29
A six-member Chinese expert team has been deployed to rescue people trapped inside the tunnel of the flood-hit Upper Trishuli 3 ‘B’ Hydropower Project in Rasuwa.
The Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers said the team arrived in the Trishuli area by a Chinese helicopter after receiving approval from the Nepal government.
The deployment comes as authorities face a highly risky and technically challenging rescue operation inside the tunnel, which was affected by floods.
The Chinese experts will work in coordination with a technical team from the Nepal Army and conduct a technical reconnaissance of the tunnel to assess the situation and the possibility of rescue.
The Prime Minister’s Office said that if the initial assessment shows rescue operations are feasible, additional Chinese experts kept on standby near the Rasuwa border will be brought to the site immediately.
The joint team will begin work after assessing conditions inside the tunnel, where rescue efforts have been complicated by the extent of damage caused by the flood.
