The Chinese Embassy in Nepal says the risk created by the ice-and-rock avalanche along the Nepal-China border remains in place. Speaking Friday, an embassy spokesperson said officials from both countries are continuously monitoring the situation.
“In recent days, an ice-and-rock avalanche occurred on a tributary on the Nepali side of the upper reaches of the border river. The landslide blocked the river, forming a barrier lake alongside it,” the statement said. “The water level in that lake is now high and has begun overflowing, increasing the risk of further damage.”
The embassy said the situation remains at an extremely sensitive stage for both Nepal and China in terms of rescue and emergency response.
“Local communities and relevant personnel downstream of the barrier lake are urged to closely monitor changes in the river’s water level, remain highly vigilant, and prepare in advance for possible risk prevention and emergency response,” the statement said.
The statement added that the relevant agencies of both China and Nepal are continuing to monitor the situation.
It also urged the public to follow only official and reliable information, avoid spreading unverified reports, and refrain from creating unnecessary panic.
