Birgunj, September 19

Two persons have drowned in a pond in Birgunj of the Parsa district in southern Nepal recently.

The victims have been identified as Aashish Kumar Sah aka Munna (17) and Preetam Sah (12), residents of Birgunj metropolitan city-15, informs Police Inspector Dinesh Gautam of the Ward Police Office, Shreepur. They were ninth and sixth graders of a local school respectively.

Both died while swimming in the Murli Pokhari pond in Birgunj-12. They had gone swimming on Friday afternoon, but they did not return by the evening, forcing the family to inform the police and launch a search mission.

Their bodies were found at around 8 pm on Saturday.

Of late, children drowning has become a regular affair in Nepal due to the lack of safety measures, insufficient recognition of the problem, and children’s inability to swim among other reasons.
