Biplav group leader in captivity calls for talks

Kathmandu, August 2

A leader of the banned Netra Bikram Chand-led Nepal Communist party under captivity says there is no alternative to talks between the rebel group and the government.

Mohan Karki (Jiwanta), a politburo member of the group arrested in March, told state-run news agency RSS that a  conflict would benefit anyone. “No one will benefit if there’s conflict in the country. We need to seek a solution to the problem,” said Karki, who is held at the Metropolitan Police Office, Teku.

Karki, who said he was arrested trying to broker talks between the government and the group, told RSS that the government needs to take the talks seriously. The Maoist leader said that his party’s plan of action was oriented towards an ‘integrated people’s revolution’ and it did not involve guerilla warfare.”

He said that he suggested Netra Bikram Chand to change the modus operandi of the party and try to take the urban middle class on board.
