Kathmandu, October 27

The Bagmati province is likely to get its new chief minister on Thursday. The position is vacant after incumbent Ashta Laxmi Shakya announced her resignation from the position earlier this afternoon.

After accepting the resignation from Shakya, Governor (Province Chief) Yadav Chandra Sharma has called political parties in the Provincial Assembly to form an alliance and stake a claim to the position with evidence that the nominee will receive majority votes in the assembly.

The parties have been asked to stake the claim by 3 pm on Thursday, as per article 168(2) of the constitution.

Accordingly, the alliance consisting of Nepali Congress, CPN-Maoist Centre, CPN-Unified Socialist and Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal is preparing to nominate Rajendra Pandey of the Unified Socialist as the chief minister.

It is highly likely that Pandey will be appointed the chief minister on Thursday itself.
