Attorney General accuses press of influencing judiciary

Agni Prasad Kharel

Kathmandu, May 9

Attorney General Agni Prasad Kharel has accused the media of exerting influence on the judiciary.

He suggests that the mass media should respect the independence of judiciary.

“I believe journalism is heading towards exerting influence on the judiciary,” speaking at a training programme organised by the Lalitpur chapter of Federation of Nepali Journalists on Thursday, Kharel said, “But, don’t you need to take care of independent judiciary while talking about independent press?”

Kharel claimed investigations deviated when journalists made names of people involved in various criminal cases public without collecting sufficient evidence.

Speaking at the function, Press Council Nepal chairperson Kishor Shrestha also highlighted that wrongdoings were increasing in the media sector along with their development.
