Arrest of ‘big’ businesspersons carrying ‘small coins’ at Kathmandu gambling den baffles police

Kathmandu, June 2

Police in Kathmandu arrested a group of ‘high-profile’ businesspersons while they were allegedly gambling at Gangaur Regency Boutique Hotel in Kamaladi of Kathmandu on Monday night.

However, the police say they found only a few coins and Rs 277,000 in cash used in the game, unexpectedly. Hence, their investigation has turned tricky.

Ram Chandra Sanghai, Ashok Agrawal, Purushottam Agrawal, Suresh Agrawal, Govinda Agrawal, Nanda Sharma, Bimal Khetan, Bimal Abuja, and Nikki Jogai were arrested.  Jogai is a hotelier whereas Sanghai leads the Sanghai Group as the managing director. Likewise, Ashok Agrawal is the managing director of the Vishal Group.

Acting on a tip-off, the Metropolitan Police Circle in Durbarmarg had sent a team under the command of DSP Ranjan Dahal to raid the hotel last night. However, as the team confiscated only a small amount of money, the police are confused about how to proceed with the investigation.

Nonetheless, they hope that decoding the 171 coins could reveal the exact amount of money used in the game. “In casino-style gambling, they exchange cash with such coins. After the game, they count the coins and calculate the money.”

Meanwhile, some officials have reported that they were under pressure to release the arrestees.
