Another Domestic Airport in Kathmandu: Govt commissions EIA

Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Rabindra Adhikari visits a place in Kavre with a view of constructing the domestic terminal of Kathmandu airport, on Tuesday, May 1, 2018.

Kathmandu, August 16

The government has commission an environmental impact assessment for the second domestic airport in Kathmandu, proposed to be built in Nagi Danda, Kavre.

The government has allocated Rs 250 million this fiscal for the project, says Civil Aviation Authority Spokesperson Birendra Shrestha. According to Shrestha, the EIA report will be available within a few months.

“The EIA report will tell us how much land is needed and we will also find out how much money is needed to acquire private land,” he added. “After the EIA is ready, a detailed project report will be commissioned.”

The airport is expected to be completed in five years. Officials want at least 20-30 per cent of flights now operating from the Tribhuwan International Airport to shift to the new airport.

Although the government is preparing to invest in the project, the airport will not be suitable for planes such as the Bombardier, MA-60, ATR and Jetstream planes.  The new facility will only be suitable for smaller aircraft such as the Twin Otter , Dornier and the Y-12.
