Amidst controversy, House panel opens hearing for justice appointment

A meeting of the Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee, in Kathmandu, on Wednesday, August 1, 2018.

Kathmandu, April 4

The Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee on Thursday has begun the hearing process for the appointment of five Supreme Court justices.

The Judicial Council had nominated senior advocate Kumar Regmi, advocates Hari Phunyal and Manoj Kumar Sharma, incumbent Patan High Court chief judge Prakash Dhungana and Surkhet High Court judge Sushma Lata Mathema for the vacant positions.

The Committee says members of the public can file the complaints against them by April 15. A public notice will be issued for the call tomorrow.

Among the nominees, stakeholders have objected to the names of Regmi and Phunyal citing their previous political affiliations.

Regmi was defeated in the election for Nepali Congress Central Working Committee few years ago whereas Phunyal as a lawyer supporting then CPN-UML was the attorney general during KP Sharma Oli’s previous premiership.
