National Medical College resident doctors approach commission seeking justice after order to vacate hospital and hostel

national medical college resident doctors on protest

Kathmandu, October 2

Resident doctors from National Medical College have gone to the Medical Education Commission, demanding an environment where they can study.

They came to Kathmandu after National Medical College, in Birgunj, issued an order for them to vacate the hospital and hostel.

“There are 52 of us. Right now, 40 of us have come to Sanothimi. All of us are from Birgunj,” said resident doctor Bibek Bhattarai. “There’s no environment to study there. We’ve been threatened and intimidated. We’ve been threatened with failing us, with not signing off on our theses.”

He said that since there was no environment to study, they had come to the commission seeking justice.

“We were sent here by the government after taking the Medical Education Commission’s exam. We should be allowed to study somewhere else,” he said.

Those who came to the commission are first-year postgraduate resident doctors.

The college had earlier instructed PG resident doctors to leave the college immediately.

Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Rahbar Ansari today drew the government’s serious attention to the ongoing protest by PG students at National Medical College. Speaking at a House of Representatives meeting, he claimed PG students had been protesting for the past 10 days and had been barred from vacating the hostel, protesting, and even entering through the college gate.

Drawing the government’s attention to this, he said, “The state cannot allow colleges running a racket in the name of fake patients, fake teachers and fake inspections to leave the future of its students in uncertainty.”
