A resolution aimed at ending rape, sexual violence, and cyberbullying has been introduced in Parliament.
The resolution was proposed by CPN-UML Chief Whip Nita Ghatani, with MPs Shraddha Kunwar Chhetri, Ambika Devi Sangraula, Renuka Kaucha, Khushbu Oli, Balawati Sharma, and Parwati BK as supporters.
The proposal notes that while Nepal’s constitution guarantees every citizen’s right to live with dignity, along with rights to freedom, equality, and specific protections for children and women, incidents of rape, sexual violence, and cybercrime against women and girls continue to rise in practice.
It points out that sexual crimes against girls and young women carry long-term psychological, physical, and future consequences, while the growth of digital technology has brought new forms of harm, such as cyberbullying and character assassination, that seriously damage women’s dignity and privacy.
The resolution states that despite the constitution’s guarantee of women’s right to live with dignity and to be protected from violence, such incidents keep occurring in practice, and calls for making state mechanisms more accountable for effective enforcement of the law, speedy justice, victim protection and rehabilitation, and controlling cyber violence.
