Prachanda: Nepal faces worst national sovereignty crisis since Sugauli Treaty

Kathmandu, August 23

Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, coordinator of the Nepali Communist Party, has said that Nepal is facing its most serious crisis of national sovereignty since the Sugauli Treaty.

Addressing an interaction programme titled “Cooperation, Unity and Reorganisation in the Communist Movement” on Sunday, he said unity and cooperation among communist forces were essential to confront the current situation.

He acknowledged that the present extraordinary crisis had emerged because adequate priority had not been given to Nepal’s national sovereignty, the issues of oppressed communities and the struggle against foreign interference.

“The country is truly in crisis now. In terms of national sovereignty, perhaps such a grave crisis has never been seen since the Sugauli Treaty. Unity in the communist movement is the key to overcoming this crisis and addressing the people’s aspirations for development and prosperity,” he said.

Prachanda stressed that political parties should conduct a serious collective self-assessment rather than blaming one another for past shortcomings.

He said national sovereignty and patriotic movements had an inseparable relationship with the communist movement. He also called on representatives of various political parties attending the programme to engage in reflection and discussion to find a common way forward.
