Solukhumbu, August 10
Ward offices in Solukhumbu are facing a serious threat from landslides, resulting in the displacement of 11 families due to the relentless heavy rainfall. The affected ward offices are located in Tamakhani and Sotang Rural Municipalities in the district. Chief District Officer Kamansing Thapa Margar shared that a landslide struck last Saturday night, jeopardising the Solududhakunda Municipality-3 office, while another landslide hit the Sotang Rural Municipality-4 office just days earlier.
The ongoing rains have also caused minor damage to other government buildings in the area. Notably, a landslide has taken out the toilet facility at the Tamakhani ward office, putting the nearby administration building in jeopardy as well. Ward chair Lhakpagelu Sherpa emphasised the gravity of the situation, noting that a large landslide from the upper hill has already compromised surrounding infrastructure, including roads, and poses a risk of further damage.
He voiced concerns that if the landslide continues to worsen, it could threaten both the ward office and the local health post, making the area increasingly perilous. In Rural Municipality-9, five households have been forced to evacuate and are now staying in a nearby school due to the landslide threat. Additionally, in Likhupike Rural Municipality-3, another family has been relocated for their safety after their home was put at risk. In total, 11 families have been affected by these dangerous conditions.
