Kathmandu, July 13
Ahead of Nepal’s massive annual Kora cycling event, 28 children took to the streets in Majurwa, Sarlahi, for the first-ever 7-kilometre “Kids Kora Sarlahi” community ride.
Organised by the non-profit One More Light, the mini-event was held to celebrate education and thank cyclists nationwide who are raising money for their future.
This year, the official cause for the main Kora26 event is Project Edukick. The project uses football and arts-based programs to help children in rural Sarlahi stay in school and overcome challenges like poverty, child labour, and early marriage.
“Every kilometer ridden represents a child’s opportunity to remain in school,” said Bibek Bandhu Bhandari, Co-founder and CEO of One More Light.
While the children celebrated their ride with a slow-bike race and water dance, adult cyclists are preparing for the main event on July 18. More than 6,000 riders will participate in Kathmandu and over 20 locations worldwide. Organisers hope to raise Rs. 1 million to support school attendance and long-term learning programs.
