Kathmandu, January 23
Shree Panchami is being observed today by worshipping Goddess Saraswoti, the deity of knowledge. Also known as Basanta Panchami, the day sees a large number of devotees visiting Saraswoti temples.
Crowds have gathered at various Saraswoti temples, including Saraswoti Kund in Lele, Lalitpur; Saraswotikhel in Thimi; Neel Saraswoti in Bishalnagar; the Saraswoti Temple at Aryaghat; Maitidevi; and Swayambhu, among others.
A programme has also been scheduled this morning at Nasal Chowk inside Hanuman Dhoka Durbar, where the President observed Basanta Shrawan. It is customary for the Vice President, Prime Minister, and other dignitaries to participate in the event.
The day is celebrated as an indigenous festival associated with the advancement of knowledge, intellect, art, and music. Since the Vedic period, Saraswoti Jayanti—believed to mark the day Goddess Saraswoti appeared—has been observed by worshipping her as the goddess of learning.
It is also customary for children to begin their education and for infants to undergo nose and ear piercing rituals on this day. Schools have organised Saraswoti Puja programmes today.
There is a belief that beginning musical training on this day is auspicious. Books, musical instruments, and tools related to art and painting—considered sources of knowledge—are also worshipped as manifestations of Goddess Saraswoti.
