Minister Kharel inaugurates Ncell’s VoLTE capacity enhancement project in Pokhara

Kathmandu, December 30

Minister for Communication and Information Technology Jagadish Kharel on Sunday inaugurated Ncell’s Voice over Long Term Evolution (VoLTE) Capacity Enhancement Project at the company’s data centre in Pokhara during an observation visit.

According to a press statement released by Ncell, the project was officially launched as Minister Kharel switched on the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) system, now expanded with high-end servers to provide VoLTE and Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) services. With this upgrade, Ncell can now deliver VoLTE service to five million active customers from the Pokhara data centre.

VoLTE technology offers high-definition (HD) voice services with faster call connectivity over the 4G network. Similarly, VoWiFi allows users to make and receive calls using their Ncell number over any Wi-Fi connection, enabling HD voice calls and SMS in areas with weak mobile signals, such as basements, high-rise buildings, and remote locations, as long as a stable Wi-Fi connection is available.

During his visit, Minister Kharel also inspected the data centre, which currently functions as a Disaster Recovery centre. He was welcomed by Ncell’s Chief Corporate and Regulatory Officer, Dilliram Shrestha and Corporate Communications and Sustainability Director Bishakha Laxmi Khadka.

Speaking after the inspection, Minister Kharel said, “Infrastructure like Ncell’s data centre is contributing to the government’s goal of building a Digital Nepal. It stands as a key pillar supporting Nepal’s digitalisation drive.” He also praised the management and operations of the centre.

Shrestha noted that the data centre, operational since 2012, has played a vital role in Nepal’s telecommunications and ICT sector. “With the enhancement of VoLTE capacity, we will be extending modern VoLTE services to more customers backed by increased capacity,” he said.

During the visit, Ncell’s technical team briefed Minister Kharel on the data centre’s capacity, technological features, and overall significance in Nepal’s ICT landscape.
