Ever wondered what life will truly be like abroad? Or did you decide to study overseas just by  seeing the glamorous life on social media?

Every year, thousands of young Nepalese students pack their bags, not just with clothes and  documents, but with dreams, hopes, and silent promises to their families. Inside every  suitcase lies more than just essentials for a new life abroad; it carries years of hard work, the  expectations of loved ones, and the courage to step into the unknown.

The growing trend of studying abroad is clear from official records. In the fiscal year 2023/24,  112,593 Nepalis students were issued NOCs to pursue education overseas. The top  destinations were Japan with 34,731 students, Canada with 15,982, Australia with 14,372,  the United Kingdom with 13,339, and the USA with 11,261. These numbers show that more  students are seeking global exposure and opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Having guided countless students through this transformative journey, I have seen the sparkle  in their eyes before they fly, the nervous excitement as they imagine a new beginning, and the  emotional goodbyes exchanged at the airport. Studying abroad has become more than a trend; it is a leap of faith toward a global future. Yet behind every successful journey lies preparation, perseverance, and emotional strength. From choosing the right course and  university to adapting to a completely new culture, the path is not always smooth but it is  always worth it.

Things to consider before studying abroad

If you have decided to study abroad, you are creating a pathway to your future. Foreign  universities provide world-class education and global recognition, while international  exposure equips you with skills for a competitive career.

Success abroad requires focus and balance. Every student should remember that you are  going first to study, then to earn, and ultimately to build a stable career. One common mistake is focusing only on earning money after landing, instead of prioritizing academics. While  managing finances is important, rushing for income too early can distract from your real  purpose of education and personal growth.

Deciding if studying abroad is right for you

Before studying abroad, it’s important to know your “why.” Understanding your purpose will help you stay focused and motivated when challenges arise. If your goal is to gain knowledge and experience from a foreign university, you are already on the right path.

Prepare for the necessary exams such as IELTS, PTE, SAT, GRE, GMAT, or Duolingo, depending on the requirements of your chosen country and university.

Financial readiness is equally important—make sure you have at least your first-year tuition fees and six months of living expenses covered to manage initial challenges smoothly. Lastly, do thorough research about the country, university, and course you plan to pursue, and seek proper guidance to make well-informed decisions.

Preparation is not just paperwork. It is a mindset, an attitude, and the key to success.

A message to every student dreaming abroad

To every student about to start this journey, remember you are not just traveling to study, you are traveling to evolve. You will leave behind familiar faces, home-cooked meals, and comfort,  but you will return with stories, skills, and resilience that will shape your future.

To the parents who watch their children walk through the airport gates with moist eyes, your  sacrifices and belief make every success possible. If you must go, go chase your dream, make  it real, make it yours. But return home with pride, to wipe the tears of those who believed in  you. The greatest success is not in leaving, but in coming back fulfilled.

Studying abroad is not just about crossing borders; it is about expanding horizons emotionally,  intellectually, and spiritually. Carry your dream proudly in your suitcase, but do not forget to  pack patience, courage, and gratitude along with it.
