2024 BMW iX1: Luxurious German electric car in Nepal

The German car manufacturer BMW has added a new electric car to its collection in Nepal; the 2024 BMW iX1. This is the second all-electric car from BMW after the BMW iX3 available in Nepal. The iX1 is the electrified version of its combustion engine sibling, the BMW X1.

The iX1 debuted in November 2022 and was available in India in September 2023. The iX1 has various trim options including the M Sport package, xLine and the eDrive 20. The eDrive 20 xLine is the sole trim option available in Nepal and comes with the latest 5th-generation eDrive technology.

The electric SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) features the iconic BMW styling and packs a punch in terms of performance. The BMW iX1 will compete against the Kia EV6 and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 in Nepal. Let us see what the electric SAV offers in terms of specs.

Design

Exterior

The BMW iX1 carries the same iconic BMW X1 design in an electrified way. The front features the signature kidney grill-shaped design which has been closed off. The grill has chrome accents for a premium look. The aggressive front gets its modern look with LED headlights and LED DRLs. The hood is quite long which helps keep the car stable at higher speeds. The hood also has edges and lines which helps in aerodynamics and performance of the electric car.

Coming to the side, the BMW iX1 has a dual-tone theme along with chrome accents. The flush door handles and aerodynamic alloy wheels help in airflow and the overall performance of the electric car. The doors open wide and the ORVM have a nice field of view for incoming traffic. The charging port sits on the rear end of the right side for easy access to charge.

The rear of the BMW iX1 is much more aggressive with the LED taillights. The taillight connects from the sides to the rear. There is a rear camera along with four sensors for enhanced safety. The spoiler and the brake light sit on the top.

Interior

The interior of the BMW iX1 eDrive xline features a modern interior with a focus on comfort. The dash has soft-touch materials along with wooden trims on the panels for a classic premium touch. The steering wheel has a sporty design and has a centrally located BMW logo. The steering wheel is multi-function and has buttons for voice controls, music, volume, cruise control and call.

The BMW iX1 features a large curved connected display which includes the digital instrument cluster and the infotainment system. The digital instrument cluster is 10.25-inch in size and displays information such as battery percentage, charge, time, seat occupancy, temperature, total range left, trip meter, speed, mode and power usage. The digital instrument cluster can also be customized according to the driver’s preference.

The infotainment system on the other hand is 10.7-inch in size. Climate control has also been integrated into the infotainment system. The infotainment display supports both wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also has controls for the system of the car, navigation, audio, call, camera feed and other apps. The BMW iX1 also has a heads-up display which is adjustable and has information for speed, maps and phone info which makes it easier for the driver to concentrate on the road.

Just below the infotainment system it the AC vents and a few physical buttons such as AC diffuser, Maximum heating and rear windshield heating to clear fog or water droplets. Coming to the centre console, there is one vertically placed wireless charger to charge your smartphone, two cup holders, a start/stop button, a gear knob, a park assist button and a storage compartment with hand rest.

The seats on the BMW iX1 are comfortable and stylish with a bucket seat-type design on the front. The driver seat has a 6-way electrically adjustable function. The front passenger seats have good legroom space and comfort. Coming to the rear seats, three people can sit comfortably. The middle seat can fold down to have two cup holders for the rear passengers. There is good enough headroom and legroom for the rear passengers too.

The BMW iX1 also has a panoramic sunroof which is covered by a headliner. The headliner and the front part, the sunroof can be opened electrically using the slider. The electric car has a big boot space of 490 litres with the rear seats up whereas it gets 19

Performance

The BMW iX1 has a strong performance with its 150 kW motor which delivers a maximum power of 204 horsepower and a torque of 250 Nm. It allows the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds, and reach a top speed of 170 km/h, suitable for both city driving and highway cruising. The front-wheel-drive (FWD) system ensures good traction and handling. In terms of battery, range and charging, the iX1 has a 64.8 kWh battery that provides a range between 430 and 470 km on a full charge, according to WLTP standards.

Charging is convenient with both AC and DC options. Using an 11 kW AC charger, it takes about 6.5 hours to fully charge the battery whereas using the 130 kW DC charger it can charge the battery from 10% to 80% in just 29 minutes. The suspension system, featuring a double-wishbone front and an independent 5-link rear with adaptive suspension, ensures a smooth and comfortable ride. The ventilated disc brakes on both front and rear, along with the 205/65 R17 tyres give reliable stopping power and stability.

Safety and Features

The BMW iX1 eDrive20 xLine has various safety features which keep the car and the passengers safe. It has an Intelligent Driving Assistance System that includes several important features. For active safety, it has Lane Keeping Assistance to help keep the car in its lane, and Pedestrian Warning with Braking to avoid hitting pedestrians, ABS and Cornering Brake Control. Passive safety features include front and rear airbags. Additionally, the car has an Intelligent Parking System with sensors to help with parking, a radar sensor for braking and cruise control.
