Kathmandu, April 1

The federal government has decided to increase public transport fares by up to 14 per cent.

Whereas provincial governments have been authorised to decide transport fares for intra-province routes, the federal government’s decision will apply to inter-province routes. Nonetheless, provincial governments will also certainly increase the fares as per the federal decision.

Officials say the government has decided to increase the fares by 10 to 14 per cent as per geographic conditions. The increase will be applied to both passenger and load-carrying vehicles.

Earlier, the transport entrepreneurs had demanded a hike in the fares owing to frequent hikes in the prices of petroleum products.

The Department of Transport Management will publish a new list of transport fares on Sunday, following a decision of the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport.

Meanwhile, the government also decided to adjust the transport fares every time the fuel price changes by more than 5 per cent from now onwards. In addition, a review will be held every March-April to check if the rates are okay as per the prices of vehicle parts and other technical aspects.
