Kathmandu, June 2
As the nationwide lockdown imposed to control the coronavirus outbreak in the country continues, a group of local shopkeepers in Jorpati of Kathmandu has staged a demonstration on Tuesday afternoon, demanding they are allowed to open their shops.
Police used force and contained the situation, according to DSP Navin Karki of the Metropolitan Police Circle in Baudhdha. They also briefly detained a leader of the demonstrators.
It has been learned that the local business owners agreed to stop the protest on the condition that they would discuss the problem with Gokaneshwar municipality’s mayor Santosh Chalise and other stakeholders. The municipality’s administrative officer, Narahari Ghimire, however, says the municipality is not authorised to make a decision in this regard.
“We cannot do anything except waiting for a decision from the central government.”
Meanwhile, traders in other parts of the district have also submitted their applications to police demanding the operation of businesses, it has been learned.
