Mayor Shakya: Kathmandu is safe for now, but it may not be same for long

Kathmandu, May 6

Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Bidya Sundar Shakya has remarked that the city looks safe for now, but the situation might not stay the same with people entering the city erratically.

“If people enter irresponsibly, we will have problems regarding the place for quarantine, and preparations for safe testing. Also, we do not have the necessary equipment to tend to the people entering Kathmandu and the situation worsens,” Shakya tells Onlinekhabar in an interview.

He is of the view that the government should bar the entry of people and vehicles to the city while making the lockdown restrictions more flexible within the city.

The mayor says he is aware of the people living in difficulty, battling hunger, but maintains the local authorities are easing the situation. “We are distributing relief packages to everyone in need. Till Monday, we have distributed relief support for 88,000 families in the city.  This is more than our assumption,” he says, claiming no one in the city is hungry though the distribution system can be made more effective.

Shakya also requests people to stay where they are and help in avoiding the spread of Covid-19.
