Doti, January 19

Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens Parbat Gurung says the current session of Parliament will endorse the controversial Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) agreement signed between the governments of Nepal and the United States. The minister’s statement comes at a time when the political leaders and the public are divided about the document.

Speaking with journalists in Doti of Sudurpaschim province on Sunday, the minister said the current controversy was unnecessary. He was of the view that some leaders within his Nepal Communist Party also protested the deal due to their vested interests.

“The MCC is in interests of Nepal. Please ask them for who interest, they are protesting it,” the leader said.

Gurung was in the district to study the culture of chhaupadi, the system of secluding women into a different hut during their periods. The team will visit Achham after Doti.
