President Bidya Devi Bhandari on Monday attended a function organised on the occasion of Janaki Nawami in Janakpurdham.
The festival is celebrated every year commemorating the birth of mythical figure Sita/Janaki, who is believed to be the daughter of King Janak of Janakpur.
The Province 2 government has declared a public holiday in the province on the occasion.
Addressing a function organised on the occasion, President stressed the importance of educating and empowering girls. She commended the Educate and Protect Girls campaign launched by the provincial government and wished for its success.
The President said various wrong practices existing in the society about the status of girls and women should end at the earliest.
Speaking at the function, Province 2 Chief Minister Lalbabu Raut demanded that the federal government celebrate the festival at the national level also.
