Nirmala Pant Murder: IGP accepts police made mistakes during investigation

Kathmandu, December 24

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sarvendra Khanal, who pledged to take action against the perpetrators involved in the rape and murder of 13-year old Nirmala Pant, has agreed that police made a mistake while investigating the case.

Bishal Chaudhary, one of the suspects taken into custody 20 days ago, was released two days ago by authorities after a negative DNA report cleared him of the charges.

According to Chaudhary, he was tortured and forced to accept the crime by police. Khanal, referring to that incident, agreed that there were problems with the investigation. “We wanted to find the culprits fast, which was a wrong approach,” he said.

At a press conference held in police headquarters, Khanal mentioned he can’t tell the public how close his team was to solving the case.

But he promised to take action against those who created hindrances during the investigation.  “We are looking at the report which was given to us by the investigation committee and are searching for leads,” he said.

He added that he was using all his resources in an ‘honest attempt’ to find the culprits.
