Two Nepali filmmakers’ productions selected for New York film festival

Kathmandu, January 17

As Nepali filmmakers have been increasingly showing their strong presence at international film festivals these days, two Nepali filmmakers secured their places in the eight edition of New York’s Queens World Film Festival.

Anuz Thapa’s documentary ‘Fighting for Justice’ is nominated under the Best Documentary category. A Nepali freelance journalist based in New York, Thapa’s documentary highlights the reluctance of criminal justice system to charge anybody with hate crimes. The film also sheds light on the increase of anti-Muslim hate crimes in the US.

Similarly, another Nepali filmmaker Roshan Bikram Thakuri’s film ‘Silver Bangles’ is nominated under the Short Narrative cateogry. Thakuri’s film is centred on a lady who tries to save her marital life in western region f Nepal during the civil war.

As per the organiser, around 650 submissions were made in the initial round among which 180 films made it through.

The festival will run from March 15 to 25.

Nepali filmmaker’s creations are not new to this film festival. Nepali film Dying Candle won the ‘Best Cinematography in a Feature’ award at the 6th Queens World Film Festival in 2016.
