Kathmandu, November 6
Newly elected New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who has gained global attention after his election victory, visited a Nepali restaurant to enjoy a plate of momo.
On Wednesday, a day after being elected mayor of the world’s financial capital, the 34-year-old visited “Laliguras Bistro,” a Nepali restaurant located in Jackson Heights, for lunch. Mamdani shared photos on his X (Twitter) account showing him enjoying Nepali food, including momo, with plates of traditional dishes in front of him.

“My first day as mayor-elect began with interviews, meetings, and preparations,” he wrote, “but the lunch with my Congresswoman AOC (Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez) was truly special.”
He also posed for a photo in front of a picture of Gautam Buddha inside the restaurant, which is well-known among the Nepali community in New York.
Mamdani, the first Muslim and South Asian–origin mayor of New York, was reportedly targeted by former US President Donald Trump during the campaign. However, he defeated former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa to secure the historic win.
When he assumes office on January 1, 2026 Mamdani will become New York City’s youngest mayor in more than a century, as well as the first person of South Asian descent and the first born in Africa to hold the position.
