Nepalis going abroad for work will now have to open two bank accounts before they leave home. While one of the accounts will be in the worker’s name, the second will be in their next of kin’s name.
Labour Minister Farmullah Mansoor says the measure is being implemented to discourage people from spending all their hard-earned money on consumption.
“We have seen that people working abroad are sending money home through illegal channels. We are introducing this new rule to counter that,” said Minister Mansoor.
The government believes that migrant workers can save up some money in their own account while their family members spend money deposited in their own account.
According to the health ministry, the government will soon make it compulsory for migrant workers and their family to get insurance through a government-run healthcare scheme.
According to the Nepal Rastra Bank, only 28 percent of the income received from abroad is saved by households.
