With the onset of winter, many people suffer from cold and cough. While most turn to medication for relief, doctors advise against taking medicine for mild symptoms unless necessary.
Common symptoms of cold and cough include a runny or stuffy nose, headache, body ache, difficulty breathing due to phlegm, and loss of appetite. These eight home remedies suggested by Ayurvedic physician Dr Amrit Bhandari also the director at Sahara Ayurveda and Therapy Center Pvt Ltd, Gongabu, Kathmandu can often be alleviated using simple home remedies readily available in most kitchens.
1. Turmeric water
Turmeric is effective in combating allergies and viral infections due to its active compound, curcumin, which boosts immunity. Mix a teaspoon of turmeric powder in a glass of warm milk or water, let it sit for a while, and drink it like tea. Consume it twice daily, in the morning and evening.
2. Consume warm liquids
Drinking plenty of warm liquids, including water, soups, and protein-rich broths, helps alleviate cold symptoms. These improve immunity and support the body in fighting off infections.
3. Honey with warm water
Honey is a natural remedy with immune-boosting properties. Mixing honey with warm water can soothe cold symptoms and relieve cough. It is also commonly used in many homemade remedies for colds and coughs.
4. Ginger
Ginger’s anti-inflammatory properties help reduce dry or asthmatic cough and provide pain relief. Mixing ginger juice with honey in warm water or milk can soothe the throat and alleviate cough.
5. Basil leaves
Boil four to five basil leaves in tea or warm water for two minutes, and consume the mixture two to three times daily. Adding honey or salt enhances its effectiveness. Alternatively, chewing fresh basil leaves can relieve throat irritation and coughing.
6. Cloves and cinnamon
Cloves and cinnamon have antifungal, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic properties. Boil them in water or milk, optionally adding ginger and turmeric for flavor, to reduce throat irritation and cough.
7. Black pepper
Black pepper is considered a traditional remedy for colds. Add ground pepper to warm water or milk and drink it. Black pepper contains compounds like piperine, iron, potassium, magnesium, zinc, chromium, and vitamins A, C, and D, which provide various health benefits.
8. Steam inhalation
For nasal congestion, inhaling steam can be beneficial. However, it is only recommended if there is severe congestion or phlegm buildup. For a runny nose without congestion, steam inhalation may not be necessary.
