Sixty per cent of doctors have failed the name registration (licensing) examination conducted by the Nepal Medical Council. Registrar Dr Satish Kumar Dev said that only 39.45 per cent of candidates passed the 74th licensing examination for MBBS and BDS.
The computer-based examination was held on Tuesday and Wednesday at the examination centre of the Institute of Engineering Studies in Pulchok. Of the 943 candidates who appeared for the exam, only 372 passed.
A total of 967 MBBS and BDS graduates had submitted application forms for the licensing examination. Among them, 24 were absent, according to Dr Dev.
In the medical stream (MBBS), 793 candidates submitted forms, of whom 775 appeared in the examination. Only 300 candidates, or 38.7 per cent, passed.
Similarly, in the dental stream (BDS), 174 candidates submitted forms, but only 168 appeared for the exam. Of them, 72 candidates, or 42.85 per cent, passed, the Council said.
The results have raised questions about the academic quality of universities and colleges teaching medical science. However, Registrar Dr Dev claimed that the number of candidates who failed this time includes a higher proportion of those who had already failed previous examinations.
