Kanchanpur, February 5
Nepal’s wildlife officials have begun counting the Royal Bengal tiger population at Shuklaphanta National Park, one of the 12 national parks in Nepal.
Camera traps are being laid in and around the park to track the movement of the tigers and a team of 90, including technical staff have been mobilised for the census, said assistant conservation officer at the Park, Gopal Bahadur Ghimire.
“As many as 260 camera traps have been installed. The movement of tigers will be monitored at four locations inside the Park, four on the premises of the national forests and three in the Chure region, Jogbudha and Dadeldhura,” he added.
According to him, the census will take around 20 days to complete. It is for the first time that the tiger census is being conducted at Jogbudha of Dadeldhura. Seventeen tigers were found in the Park during the last census in 2013.
